The story
Sea plates you can wear.
Ocean by miniblank prints the sea as the naturalists drew it: sharks, rays, octopuses, reef fish and corals, from books printed between 1785 and 1913. Nothing made up and nothing generated: each animal is cut from its page as it was drawn.

Sharks and rays.
Samuel Garman drew the sharks and rays for The Plagiostomia, published in 1913; Andrew Smith drew the whale shark in 1849. We print them big on the back in one ink, or in a coral or sea-teal ink.
The reef and the octopus.
Angelfish and butterflyfish from Marcus Elieser Bloch’s Ichthyologie (1785–97), the corals and anemones of the Red Sea from Carl Benjamin Klunzinger’s plates (1877), and Jean-Baptiste Vérany’s octopuses in colour (1851). We print them in their plates’ own colours.

The Red Sea depths.
The depth charts are drawn from NOAA’s ETOPO 2022 model of the seafloor, in bands at 10, 30, 60, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 m: the whole sea, Ras Mohammed, the Farasan Banks and the coast from Jeddah to Al-Lith.
